LEGISPOOL urges ethical reporting as 3rd legislative session opens

CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia — The Legislative Press Pool (LEGISPOOL) has called on its members to recommit to professionalism, ethical journalism and responsible conduct as Liberia’s National Legislature officially opens its third session amid heightened public scrutiny and political tension.

In a statement issued Tuesday, LEGISPOOL President Emmanuel Kollie reminded accredited reporters covering both the House of Representatives and the Senate that their role carries a significant public trust, particularly at a time when legislative actions are drawing intense national attention.

“LEGISPOOL recognizes that its members are trained professionals entrusted with the critical responsibility of informing the public about legislative proceedings,” Kollie said. “Accuracy, balance, respect for institutional processes, and adherence to journalistic ethics must guide our coverage at all times.”

The call comes as lawmakers return to Capitol Hill for a session expected to focus on governance reforms, oversight of the executive branch and the consideration of key national issues. With political divisions and public expectations running high, LEGISPOOL warned that irresponsible reporting could undermine both public confidence and the credibility of legislative journalism.

The organization cautioned its members against sensationalism, personal bias, misinformation and the publication of unverified claims, noting that such practices erode trust and distort public understanding of legislative work.

“Our collective credibility depends on our commitment to truth, fairness and professionalism,” President Kollie added

LEGISPOOL further emphasized the importance of collegiality among reporters and respectful engagement with lawmakers, legislative staff and security personnel. Members were urged to observe established rules and protocols governing access to legislative proceedings, interviews and official documents.

According to the press pool, professionalism within the legislative press corps is essential not only for accurate reporting but also for maintaining constructive relationships that enable journalists to perform their duties effectively.

“As the third session unfolds, LEGISPOOL urges all members to demonstrate through their work that legislative journalism in Liberia remains principled, responsible and worthy of public trust,” the statement said.

The Legislative Press Pool is an association of accredited journalists assigned to cover the National Legislature. It serves as a coordinating body for parliamentary reporting and advocates for press freedom, access to information and ethical standards within the legislature.

The third session of the Legislature is expected to set the tone for the remainder of the legislative term, making media coverage a critical link between lawmakers and the public they serve.
