BARCLAYVILLE, Grand Kru County – Citizens of Grand Kru County have continued to turn out in their numbers to welcome and celebrate their Senator, Albert T. Chie, as he tours the county to express gratitude for his re-election during the 2023 General and Presidential Elections.
Senator Chie, who has represented the county since 2011, is currently on a “Thank You” tour across the county, a gesture aimed at appreciating the electorate for renewing his mandate.
Speaking to journalists via mobile phone from Grand Kru on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Senator’s Chief of Office Staff, Attorney Lavoisier Julu, disclosed that the citizens themselves are leading the outpouring of appreciation for Senator Chie’s numerous contributions to the county over the years.
According to Atty. Julu, the Grand Kru Senator is not in the county to initiate new development projects, but rather to interact with residents, inspect ongoing initiatives, and listen to their concerns.
“Senator Albert T. Chie is here with his people to appreciate them and listen to issues affecting them. He is inspecting several development projects he started before the 2023 elections — including clinics, town halls, school buildings, and bridges — which are spread across the county,” Julu said.
He clarified that the Senator’s visit is not intended to make new promises but to engage citizens on their developmental priorities and consider proposals they may present.
“Unlike many politicians who abandon their people and projects after elections, Senator Chie continues to maintain strong relations with his constituents,” Atty. Julu emphasized.
Describing the Senator’s relationship with the county, Julu said: “Senator Chie is commonly known as the ‘Political Godfather’ of Grand Kru County because of his generosity and unwavering support to the people, not just of Grand Kru but across the entire Southeastern region.”
Highlighting Senator Chie’s record in the Liberian Senate, Julu praised him for his leadership in legislative reforms, particularly in championing constitutional amendments during the 2020 National Referendum — though many of those propositions did not meet the two-thirds threshold required for approval.
Among the proposed amendments championed by Senator Chie were:
- Amendment to Article 28 to provide for the inalienability of citizenship for natural-born Liberians (Dual Citizenship);
- Reduction of Senators’ term from nine to seven years (Article 45);
- Election of a Senate President Pro-Tempore for a term of five years (Article 47);
- Reduction of Representatives’ term from six to five years (Article 48);
- Reduction of the President’s term from six to five years (Article 50);
- Change of general election date from the second Tuesday of October to the second Tuesday of November (Article 83a);
- Reduction of the timeframe for resolving election disputes from thirty to fifteen days (Article 83c).
Meanwhile, Atty. Julu disclosed that citizens of Grand Kru are appealing to Senator Chie to work with the central government to address the county’s deplorable road conditions ahead of the rainy season — a challenge that often leads to skyrocketing prices of basic commodities due to transportation difficulties.
He further clarified that the Senator’s “Thank You Tour” is non-political and not intended to criticize the Unity Party-led government of President Joseph N. Boakai.
“Senator Chie’s visit is not about politics or criticizing the government. It’s about listening to the people and taking their views back to Capital Hill for action,” Julu said.
