Wologisi risks being stripped of 2nd division title

Wologisi FC, the current champions of the 2024-2025 Liberia Football Association (LFA) Second Division League, risk being stripped of their title for allegedly failing to honor their final league match.

Wologisi, who were crowned champions of the Second Division with four games to spare, forfeited their Tuesday, April 7, 2025, league fixture against relegation-threatened Nimba Kwado FC without any genuine excuse, according to the LFA Competition Department.

A communication signed by LFA Competition Manager, Joel Freeman, stated that Wologisi’s decision not to honor the match undermined the principles of fair play and negatively impacted the relegation battle in the Second Division.

“Your action, coupled with the results of yesterday, automatically relegated another club and also lifted another club out of relegation contention,” the communication added.

As a result of Wologisi’s forfeiture, Gompa FC and Cece United fell into the relegation zone, while Nimba Kwado climbed further above the drop zone.

Consequently, Wologisi FC has been fined L$150,000 in line with Chapter 3, Article 6.0 of the LFA rules and regulations. The club must settle the fine before their next match against Sinoe NPA II, scheduled for Sunday, April 13, 2025, or face automatic relegation.

The rules state: “(f) If a club fails to report for or honor a match without just cause…” and “(l) Besides forfeiting the match (count ‘k’) by 3 points and two goals, the club shall be fined LRD 150,000, to be paid immediately before their next match. Failure to pay would lead to automatic relegation.”

Additionally, the club has been referred to the LFA Disciplinary Committee for investigation.

The LFA Competition Department emphasized: “Besides the fine and points forfeiture, we are forwarding you to the LFA Disciplinary Committee for investigation relative to upholding the rule of fair play and football integrity. Please be reminded that they could take further actions consistent with the impact of your action on the league.”

Meanwhile, the LFA has also rejected a request from Wologisi FC for the rescheduling of their match against Sinoe NPA II, stating that the request did not meet the provisions outlined in Chapter 3, Article 5.4, counts 1-5.

The provisions state:

1. “A request for the postponement of a match(es) shall not be granted by the LFA except on the grounds of force majeure.”
2. “If a match is postponed or abandoned on grounds of bad weather or other sufficient cause, it shall be replayed within 24 hours of the scheduled date at the same venue.”

Owned by Lofa County Senator and Chairman of the County Sports Steering Committee, Momo Cyrus, Wologisi FC had requested the postponement of their match away to Sinoe NPA II in Greenville due to their involvement in a charity match.

According to information gathered by The Liberian Investigator, the team is currently in Lofa County as part of activities marking the county’s celebration of the 2024-2025 National County Sports Meet trophies.

They are expected to play a celebration match against the Lofa County team that won the 2024-2025 National County Sports Meet.
