MONROVIA — The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection says it is now actively involved in the investigation of an alleged rape case against Deputy Youth and Sports Minister for Youth Development J. Bryant McGill, who is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
The ministry said its Gender-Based Violence Division was notified of the case on Sept. 10 and immediately alerted the Liberia National Police’s Women and Children Protection Section (WACPS) and the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Crimes Unit to launch a formal probe.
A social worker from the division has been assigned to work with investigators, reviewing CCTV footage and collecting other evidence, officials confirmed.
Authorities said they also reached out to the survivor’s father, offering counseling, care, and protective services for him and his daughter. But the father has so far declined, citing safety concerns despite assurances from the ministry.
Gender Minister Gbeme Horace Kollie has written the Liberia National Police urging swift and thorough action, while stressing her ministry’s “zero tolerance” stance toward sexual and gender-based violence.
“No individual is above the law, regardless of position or affiliation,” the ministry said in a statement. “The safety, dignity, and rights of all children remain paramount. We are committed to ensuring that justice is served and that survivors of abuse receive the care and protection they deserve.”
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities calling on anyone with information to come forward.
