GBARKOR HILL, Bong County — Authorities have confirmed the death of one person after a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a valley along Gbarkor Hill.
The fatal accident occurred around 8 p.m. Friday, May 16.
The bus, which was traveling from Ganta to Monrovia, reportedly collided with a vehicle belonging to Resident Judge Boimah Kontoe of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court in Gbarnga. The impact caused the bus driver to lose control, overturn the vehicle, and plunge into the valley.
In a phone interview with The Liberian Investigator on Sunday, Bong County Police Commander Col. Fasu Sheriff said the bus was carrying 51 passengers, including seven children between the ages of 1 and 17.
“They were en route to Monrovia when they hit Judge Kontoe’s vehicle, which was in front of them,” Sheriff said. “Fortunately, the judge’s car was not damaged, and he sustained no injuries. The bus then descended into the valley near Gbarkor Hill, just before reaching Felela.”
Injured passengers were rushed to several medical facilities, including Salala Health Center, Phebe Hospital in Suakoko, and CB Dunbar Hospital in Gbarnga. Sheriff confirmed that one of the 38 individuals taken to Phebe Hospital died upon arrival.
“We were informed that one person passed away before reaching the hospital. The rest are undergoing treatment, and several have already begun to recover,” he said.
Sheriff added that many of the survivors have been discharged, while others remain hospitalized in stable condition.
Commenting on Judge Kontoe’s condition, he said the judge did not sustain any serious injuries and continued his journey to Monrovia that same night. No additional fatalities have been reported. Gbarkor Hill remains a notorious accident-prone area and has claimed numerous lives in the past
