MONROVIA — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in partnership with the British Embassy, has launched a capacity-building program to prepare Liberian diplomats for the country’s upcoming tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in 2026.
The one-day training, held Tuesday at the Foreign Ministry in Monrovia, focused on strengthening communication skills and diplomatic strategy for staff who will help represent Liberia on the global stage. Participants included assistant ministers, senior diplomats, desk officers, and administrative staff.
Training Focus
The session was facilitated by Mme. Joanna Mark Reiter, Deputy Chief of Mission at the British Embassy, and featured interactive workshops simulating real-world UNSC scenarios. Topics included:
Effective use of language and information in Council deliberations.
Preparing impactful briefings for the UNSC.
Delivering clear and persuasive speeches.
Mme. Reiter stressed that concise communication is vital for advancing Liberia’s priorities, including peacebuilding, sustainable development, and human rights.
Officials React
Reginald B. Goodridge, Director General of the Foreign Service Institute, praised the initiative as a pivotal step in preparing Liberia for its Security Council seat.
“This collaboration with the British Embassy strengthens our capacity to represent Liberia’s interests and contribute meaningfully to global peace efforts,” Goodridge said. “We are committed to ensuring our team is well-prepared to engage with confidence and clarity.”
The British Embassy reaffirmed its support for Liberia’s diplomatic readiness. “Liberia’s election to the UNSC is a testament to its leadership in West Africa,” Mme. Reiter said. “We are proud to partner with the Ministry to enhance the skills needed for effective participation in this critical forum.”
The training marks the start of a series of preparatory activities leading up to Liberia’s UNSC role. The Ministry expressed gratitude to the British Embassy for its continued partnership and said more programs will follow to bolster Liberia’s engagement in international diplomacy.
“As Liberia gears up for its UNSC role, this capacity-building effort reflects a shared commitment to diplomatic excellence and global stability,” the ministry said in a statement.
