BELÉM, Brazil — A fire inside the COP30 Climate Conference venue forced thousands of delegates to evacuate Thursday afternoon after thick smoke was seen billowing from Zone B, prompting an immediate emergency response.
The evacuation order was issued at 17:37 local time through the conference’s emergency alert system, instructing all participants to leave the building “at once.” Security teams and firefighters quickly moved in to secure the area and begin containment.
Authorities said no injuries have been reported, but the extent of the fire and potential damage to the facility remain unclear. Witnesses described confusion as alarms sounded and attendees rushed toward designated exits.
Firefighters are currently working to determine the source of the blaze while the COP30 Secretariat prepares an official statement.
