MONROVIA – Atty. Alexander V. S. Saylee, the Montserrado County Chairman for the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), has openly condemned the party’s support for Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa as Speaker of the House. Saylee asserts that endorsing Koffa represents a fundamental misalignment with the CDC’s core principles and objectives.
This denouncement follows a townhall meeting where Speaker Koffa engaged with scores of Liberians in the diaspora, an event that reportedly highlighted his contributions to national development and solidified his standing within the party. Despite the positive reception at the townhall, Saylee launched a scathing attack on Koffa, accusing him—without offering evidence—of prioritizing personal gain over the party’s collective goals, thus jeopardizing party unity and integrity. Saylee described Koffa as “untrustworthy, unreliable, disloyal, and uncommitted.”
According to Saylee, the CDC harbors more suitable candidates for the role of Speaker—individuals whose loyalty and dedication to the party’s ideals are beyond reproach.
Amidst calls for immediate leadership changes, Saylee is pushing for Koffa’s resignation to make way for leadership that more accurately reflects the CDC’s values and aspirations.
However, some CDC members, preferring to remain anonymous, speculate that Saylee’s stance may be driven by internal party rifts, including concerns over Speaker Koffa may be eyeing the presidency taking into consideration his increasing influence both in Liberia and in the diaspora.
Representative Koffa was elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives on January 15 this year, securing 36 votes out of a total of 67.
The Unity Party-backed candidate, Representative Richard Nagbe Koon, trailed behind with 31 votes.
