Capitol Building – Bong County District #6 Representative Moima Briggs Mensah has declared neutrality in the intensifying political crisis within the House of Representatives, which centers on efforts to remove Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.
In a statement issued on November 20, 2024, Rep. Briggs Mensah stated her commitment to peace, integrity, and constitutional order, vowing to remain neutral until the legislature resumes constitutional sessions in its proper chamber.
“My decision stems from a firm commitment to preserving my integrity, promoting peace, and avoiding actions that may further inflame tensions,” she stated. She also reiterated her criticism of the majority bloc’s actions, which she previously described as “illegal and unconstitutional,” noting that aligning with them would undermine her principles.
The Bong County lawmaker expressed disappointment in Speaker Koffa’s leadership, accusing him of failing to maintain impartiality and unity within the legislature.
“I firmly believe he has lost the moral authority and impartiality required to lead the 55th Legislature effectively. His inability to unite our legislative body has hindered the smooth conduct of the people’s business,” she said.
Despite her neutrality, Rep. Briggs Mensah reassured her constituents of her unwavering commitment to her legislative duties. She announced plans to host a town hall meeting to discuss issues affecting Bong County and the nation, reaffirming her dedication to serving the electorate.
“To my constituents, I remain committed to fulfilling the mandate you entrusted to me. Let us come together this weekend to address the pressing challenges our district and country face,” she urged.
Acknowledging potential disappointment from allies and supporters, she emphasized that her decision was driven by a desire to protect her integrity and focus on serving the Liberian people.
“Political sustainability is built on integrity, and I am committed to preserving mine during this critical period. My focus remains on upholding the rule of law and ensuring that our legislative processes reflect the values and aspirations of the Liberian people,” she stated.
Rep. Briggs Mensah also called on her colleagues to prioritize dialogue and reconciliation, emphasizing the importance of unity in addressing the needs of the Liberian people.
“While we face internal conflicts, there are greater battles to fight on behalf of the Liberian people. Let us prioritize dialogue, reconciliation, and respect for the Constitution as we work toward peace and stability in Liberia,” she advised.
