CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia – In a decisive move to restore order and discipline across the University of Liberia’s campuses, President Dr. Layli Maparyan, in consultation with the Board of Trustees, has established the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC) — a key step in her reform agenda aimed at addressing the growing wave of student indiscipline and campus violence.
The committee, composed of representatives from the faculty, legal affairs, student affairs, staff, and the student body, has been tasked with investigating alleged breaches of the UL Student Handbook and recommending penalties in keeping with institutional regulations.
In a memorandum dated October 13 Dr. Maparyan stated that the committee will operate until the end of the 2025–2026 academic year, following the procedures and terms outlined in the new and revised UL Student Handbook. She emphasized that the SDC will convene at least once per semester—or as necessary—to ensure prompt handling of disciplinary matters and will provide regular reports to university authorities.
Committee Begins Work
Following its official inauguration on October 23, at the Fendall Campus, the SDC has already begun receiving complaints and investigating reported cases of student misconduct.
In an interview with UL Relations on October 25, the committee’s chairperson, Mr. Andrew K. Dean, expressed gratitude to Dr. Maparyan for his appointment and pledged to uphold the highest standards of fairness and professionalism.
“I feel very pleased and honored as a young man to be selected to chair the SDC. This is something I take great pride in,” Dean said.
“The SDC is now open to receive formal complaints regarding alleged violations of university rules, and all proceedings will follow due process — ensuring fairness, confidentiality, and respect for the rights of all parties involved.”
Upholding Discipline and Institutional Values
Dean urged students to embody the values that define the University of Liberia’s vision and mission, reminding them of the school’s enduring motto — “Lux in Tenebris” (Light in Darkness).
Beyond investigating misconduct and recommending penalties, the SDC also plans to conduct awareness sessions to promote ethical conduct and compliance with university policies.
“We don’t only take pleasure in investigating and holding students liable for misconduct,” Dean explained. “We’re equally focused on prevention — holding town hall meetings and fostering a safe, respectful environment for learning.”
Reform for Excellence
The formation of the SDC is a central part of Dr. Maparyan’s broader reform drive anchored on her five ‘Es’ vision: Education, Efficiency, Effectiveness, Excellence, and Ethics. The initiative underscores her administration’s commitment to creating a more disciplined, productive, and morally upright academic community at the University of Liberia.
