BREAKING: Associate Justice-designate Boakai Kanneh calls for complete rewrite of 1986 Constitution

CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia – Associate Justice-designate Boakai Kanneh on Tuesday called for a complete rewrite of Liberia’s 1986 Constitution, arguing that the current framework is outdated and no longer reflects the country’s evolving governance needs.

Speaking during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Kanneh said a full constitutional overhaul would not undermine the structure of government but would instead strengthen democratic institutions and align national laws with present-day realities.

“There are provisions in the Constitution that are no longer applicable or relevant to today’s Liberia,” Kanneh said. “A total rewrite is necessary to ensure that the Constitution meets the current governance demands of the country.”

While making the case for reform, Kanneh also pledged to uphold the rule of law and carry out his duties with impartiality and diligence if confirmed to the Supreme Court bench.
