MONROVIA — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to environmental protection and climate action, describing responsible management of Liberia’s natural resources as central to national development and long-term prosperity.
Delivering his Annual Message to the 55th Legislature on Monday, Boakai said his government has strengthened enforcement of environmental and biodiversity laws to ensure resources are protected and sustainably used.
He said environmental governance has been decentralized, giving local communities and authorities a greater role in decision-making and conservation efforts.
On climate action, the president cited progress on international commitments, including Liberia’s ratification of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, which aims to protect marine resources beyond national borders.
Boakai also said the government has expanded access to climate finance and established a Carbon Market Authority, a move intended to position Liberia to benefit from carbon trading while preserving forests and reducing emissions.
On conservation, the president disclosed that authorities have begun clearing intruders from Sarpo National Park, an effort he said is designed to protect wildlife and open the park to tourism and other sustainable economic activities that could create jobs.
He further announced the establishment of a modern environmental laboratory to strengthen environmental monitoring, testing and enforcement nationwide.
Boakai said his administration remains committed to balancing environmental protection with economic growth, stressing that development must not come at the expense of Liberia’s natural heritage.
“The protection of our environment is inseparable from our national development agenda,” the president said, pledging continued efforts to safeguard natural resources for present and future generations.
