KAKATA, Liberia — Musa Bility, political leader of the newly formed Citizens Movement for Change (CMC), on Saturday June 7, in Kakata, Margibi County accused President Joseph Boakai’s administration of attempting to suppress opposition voices, describing the government as a “creeping monster.”
Speaking at a political gathering in Kakata, Bility alleged that Boakai’s first mandate upon taking office was to destabilize the legislature, claiming it was part of a broader strategy to undermine dissent.
“That point he wants to prove — we will not allow you to prove it,” Bility said.
Bility also criticized the president for what he called a failure to investigate visible acts of corruption within his administration, while instead targeting opposition figures, including the removal and reported imprisonment of a former house speaker.
The CMC leader urged opposition parties to unite, warning that continued inaction could lead to the arrest of more opposition members. “If we don’t talk and act now, every one of us in the opposition will end up in jail,” he said.
Bility accused the Unity Party-led government of “sneaking up” on opposition groups and undermining the democratic will of the people by exerting control over the legislature. He also said President Boakai has failed to promote national reconciliation after winning the 2023 election by a narrow margin.
Bility added that he has spoken with former President George Weah and urged him to take a stand against what he termed a growing threat to opposition politics in Liberia.
