Monrovia— Arab Fofana delivered one of the most successful seasons in Shaita Angels’ history. He guided the Careysburg club the 2025-2026 Orange Cup title, assembled the league’s most prolific attack and came within one point of winning the Liberia Football Association Upper Women’s League championship.
Yet, despite those achievements, Shaita Angels and Fofana have gone their separate ways.
The club announced Tuesday that it had mutually agreed to terminate the CAF instructor’s contract, bringing an end to a campaign that many regarded as a breakthrough season for the Angels.
Under Fofana, Shaita Angels finished second in the league with 57 points from 22 matches, recording 18 wins, three draws and just one defeat. The club scored a league-high 82 goals while conceding only eight, finishing with a goal difference of plus-74.
The only thing missing was the league title.
Determine Girls edged Shaita Angels to the championship by a single point, finishing with 58 points to retain the crown. Needing a victory to overthrow Determine Girls, Shaita settled for a goalless draw on the final day of the season.
While the club has not publicly explained the reasons behind the decision, sources familiar with the matter told The Liberian Investigator that the separation was influenced by more than the narrow title loss.
According to a source close to the club, Fofana and members of the club’s management experienced several professional disagreements throughout the season, ultimately straining their working relationship.
The source also said tensions intensified after Shaita Angels missed out on the league title.
Shortly after the title race concluded, a video circulated on social media showing Fofana engaged in a verbal exchange with individuals associated with Determine Girls before the deciding league match between the two clubs.
In the video, Fofana appeared to boast about his team’s superiority and questioned the depth of the Determine Girls squad.
“I can draw your entire team. Determine Girls don’t have a bench. In fact, you people are a church team,” he was heard saying.
The remarks were widely interpreted as indirect criticism of Determine Girls coach Robert Lartey, who is known for emphasizing Christian values and discipline within his team.
The Liberian Investigator also learned that before the video surfaced publicly, Determine Girls had submitted a formal complaint to Shaita Angels’ management regarding Fofana’s conduct. Neither club has publicly disclosed the outcome of that complaint.
Despite the reported disagreements, Shaita Angels praised Fofana’s contribution in announcing his departure.
“Shaita Angels FC can confirm that the club has terminated the contract of Head Coach Arab Fofana,” the club said in a statement.
“Coach Fofana departs after a memorable season in which he guided the Angels to Orange Cup glory and a second-place finish in the league. The club sincerely thanks Coach Fofana for his contribution during his time with Shaita Angels FC. We wish him every success in his future endeavors.”
The club concluded its statement with a brief farewell: “Thank you, Coach Fofana, and all the best for the future.”
Although the reasons behind the separation remain undisclosed, Fofana leaves having transformed Shaita Angels into one of the country’s strongest women’s football teams and establishing the club as a genuine title contender.
Attention will now shift to who succeeds him as head coach and whether Shaita Angels can build on the foundation laid during one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history.
