MONROVIA — Nineteen female inmates and four correction officers at the Monrovia Central Prison have earned certificates in coaching under the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) D License program.
The eight-day training, the first of its kind in Liberia’s correctional system, was organized by the Liberia Football Association (LFA) in partnership with CAF.
According to an LFA release, the initiative marks a significant step toward rehabilitation through sports, aiming to equip participants with life-changing opportunities for reintegration into society.
The participants received their certificates with pride, showcasing the lessons they had learned throughout the course and expressing gratitude to the LFA and CAF for the meaningful opportunity.
Jodie M. Reid-Seton, third vice president of the LFA and a member of CAF’s Women’s Football Committee, praised the participants for their dedication and perseverance. She also extended thanks to instructors Selam Kedebe and Robert Lartey for their time and expertise.
“Football transcends the boundaries of the pitch. It brings people together, builds character, empowers people and creates hope,” Reid-Seton said, emphasizing the unifying power of the sport.
She urged the participants to apply the knowledge they had gained, stressing that such initiatives are vital in preparing them for successful reintegration into society.
Also speaking at the event, Saye-Taayor Adolphus Dolo, second vice president of the LFA, expressed excitement over the program’s success and voiced optimism that similar initiatives would be expanded to other correctional facilities, promoting empowerment, inclusion and positive change through football.
Human rights advocate Adama K. Dempster congratulated the participants and encouraged them to view themselves as agents of transformation upon release, reminding them that prison should serve as a center for rehabilitation.
The CAF D License is an entry-level coaching qualification focused on grassroots football development. It introduces participants to coaching principles, team management and foundational youth player development, laying the groundwork for advancement in football coaching.
