MONROVIA – Harvest Intercontinental American University (HIAU) is positioning itself as a transformative force in Liberia’s higher education sector, vowing to bridge the longstanding gap between academic learning and practical application.
Speaking Tuesday at the university’s main campus, Chancellor Bishop Darlington Johnson outlined an ambitious vision for the institution’s role in national development. “We are here to shape Liberia’s future,” he declared, emphasizing a commitment to producing graduates equipped not only with academic credentials but with the leadership and innovation skills necessary to drive change.
HIAU was founded in response to the persistent challenges plaguing Liberia’s education system—one long constrained by inadequate resources and limited access. Its curriculum spans disciplines including business administration, law, health sciences, and technology, structured to blend theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. The goal, according to university officials, is to empower students to become job creators rather than mere job seekers in an already strained labor market.
Recognizing economic barriers as a key obstacle to higher education, HIAU has prioritized affordability as a cornerstone of its strategy. Through strategic fundraising initiatives, the university has secured substantial resources to subsidize tuition, ensuring financial hardship does not exclude capable Liberians from academic advancement. “Education should not be a privilege reserved for a few,” Bishop Johnson asserted, reinforcing HIAU’s mission to provide high-caliber, inclusive education.
HIAU is also at the forefront of digital learning in Liberia, investing heavily in e-learning platforms designed to expand access to quality education, particularly for students in remote areas. “Our digital platforms ensure that every student, regardless of location, can benefit from our programs,” Johnson said, stressing the university’s alignment with global educational standards.
Beyond academics, HIAU places strong emphasis on leadership and ethical development—a crucial focus in a country where governance challenges and limited job creation have stymied progress. The institution’s curriculum integrates leadership training and practical skill-building, with the aim of cultivating ethical, accountable professionals capable of influencing both the public and private sectors.
Though still in its formative years, HIAU is already making an impact. Students have lauded its unique approach, viewing it as a long-overdue response to the realities of Liberia’s economic and social landscape.
