ZWEDRU, Grand Gedeh County — Wallace International Incorporated, a Liberian-owned firm headquartered in the United States, has unveiled a $3 million investment aimed at reshaping education, trade, and housing in southeastern Liberia.
For CEO Wenceslaus Wallace Sr. and his wife, Eva Youboty-Wallace, the move is both business and homecoming. Eva hails from Grand Gedeh, and the couple described the initiative as a tribute to her roots and a long-awaited opportunity to give back.
“We have decided to invest three million United States dollars in the local economy of Grand Gedeh to support development in three priority areas—education, trade, and housing,” Wallace said.
Digitized library
At the center of the plan is a $1 million modern digitized library at the Grand Gedeh County Community College campus. Powered by solar energy and accessible 24 hours a day, the facility will provide students, faculty, and researchers with thousands of digital books, journals, and resources. It will be named in honor of Eva Youboty-Wallace.
A second library and computer center of equal quality will be built at Ziah Town Central High School in Konobo District.
“Our assessment showed that students and researchers at the Grand Gedeh County Community College face challenges due to lack of adequate resource materials. We want to solve this problem,” Wallace explained.
Modern market centers
The second component is the construction of the Ma Anna Youboty-Sancea Market Center in Zwedru and the Ma Tahyornoh Youboty-Dweh Market Center in Ziah Town, also budgeted at $1 million.
Unlike Zwedru’s current basic facilities, the new markets will include electricity, restrooms, a sewage system, eco-friendly waste disposal, and a parking lot. The Wallaces described them as commercial hubs for Grand Gedeh and the wider southeast.
“Our needs assessment revealed that Zwedru has only a basic market for local goods and imports. The new market will provide a vibrant, safe space for trade to flourish,” Wallace International said in a release.
Housing project
The final $1 million investment will support a modern housing project to help address expected shortages as the county’s population grows.
“Grand Gedeh is like a confluence in the southeastern region. Housing will soon become an issue, and we want to be ahead of the curve,” the Wallaces stated.
Inspired by home
The couple said the idea took root in 2019 during a vacation to Liberia, when local leaders encouraged them to channel their business success abroad into investments at home.
“Following our meeting with the local leaders, we went home and thought about what they told us about the suggestion to invest in Liberia, precisely Grand Gedeh County,” they recalled. “We reviewed our business model, held consultations, and today, we are ready to invest.”
With groundbreaking projects across three key sectors, Wallace International’s $3 million pledge represents more than infrastructure, the couple said. They described it as a promise of opportunity, growth, and renewed pride for Grand Gedeh and Liberia as a whole.
