MONROVIA — The inaugural WAFU Zone A U-17 Girls’ Tournament kicks off Wednesday at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, with Sierra Leone taking on Senegal at 4 p.m. Liberia, as host nation, will debut later in the week.
Coach Sekou Manubah has named a 20-player squad for the Young Lone Star, who have been undergoing high-intensity training sessions focused on quick ball movement, finishing drills and tactical organization as they look to make a strong showing on home soil.
The tournament, a first of its kind for the region, is designed to spotlight emerging female football talent in West Africa. Out of WAFU A’s nine member nations, only three—Sierra Leone, Senegal and Liberia—confirmed participation. Each team will play the others twice, with the top side on points crowned champion.
Local Officials in Key Roles
In addition to fielding a team, Liberia is playing a central role in organizing the competition. WAFU has appointed several Liberians to key positions, including:
- Tickly D. Monkoney, Jr. and Emmett Crayton – Organizing Committee
- Jodie Reid-Seton – Match Commissioner
- Alex Nagbo – Protocol Officer
- Anthony Kokoi – Media and Marketing Officer
- Dr. Moses Tarawali – Medical Officer
- Boris Weah – General Coordinator
- Isaac T. Montgomery – Referee Assessor
- Abraham B. Fahnbulleh – Fitness Instructor
- Madea Beatrice Edwins – Security Officer
This marks the sixth WAFU tournament Liberia has hosted since 2018, reinforcing the country’s status as a growing hub for regional football.
