Vice President, Jeremiah Kpan Koung has presented US$10,000 as a token of appreciation to the Senior National football team, the Lone Star for the hard-fought 2-1 win against São Tomé and Príncipe on Monday, March 24,2025 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium (SKD) in Paynesville.
The Liberian vice chief patron of sports visited the team’s hotel early Tuesday morning, and, was accompanied by Youth and Sports Minister Jeror Cole Bangalu, Deputy Minister for Sports Andy Quamie , as well as the Liberian Football Association (LFA)’s President, Mustpha Raji to make the donation.
In a brief address, VP Koung, emphasized the government’s unwavering support for the players, commending the team for the win.
He encouraged the team to sustain their hard work and dedication as they prepare for future challenges.
A debut goal each from Nicholas Andrews and Jimmy Bryant Farlarlun secured Liberia’s first win at home in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, having lost the three previous outings against Malawi, Equatorial Guinea, and of recent, Tunisia.
Thomas Kojo’s men got the game to a superb start, as early as the 5th minute, with Heaven Eleven’s winger Nicolas Andrew scoring with an acrobatic kick.
Andrew, who became a center of discussion for donning the iconic #14 jersey against Tunisia after it was brought from retirement, squeezed himself in the crowded area and after a bit of fantastic work by defender Nelson Laomie, to hit the ball at the back of the net. It was his debut goal in his second cap for the National team.
Liberia was up by 2-0 in the 31st minute, Laomie, a 19-year-old left full-back from Watanga FC sent in an elongated throw in the São Tomé’ penalty area and Jimmy Farkarlun was on point to head home.
Farkarlun plays in the United States for Major League Soccer (MLS) side Austin FC. He exhibited an outstanding display in his first international cap against Tunisia and is now considered one of the promising players for the Liberian national team.
Sao Tome got a cancellation in the 44th minute through midfielder Luís Costa, after Tommy Songo had made an excellent save earlier for Liberia. Songo, who have faced mammoth criticisms over the time, made another outstanding save just before the final whistle.
Despite the 2-1 win, Liberia still had work to do in front of goal, as the team could only manage two shots on target throughout the full ninety minutes. The Lone Star are still third in Group H with 10 points.
Tunisia extended their lead in Group H to four points after 2-0 win over Malawi in Tunis, while Namibia are second-placed with 12 points after a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea.
