Monrovia – Cletus Segbe Wotorson, a distinguished Liberian politician and geologist, has passed away. Born on March 13, 1937, Wotorson was a prominent figure in Liberian politics, known for his contributions to the nation’s geological and political landscapes.
Wotorson’s illustrious career began in academia, where he served as an Assistant Professor of Geology & Geophysics at the University of Liberia. He later transitioned into public service, becoming the Director of the Liberian Geological Survey from 1973 to 1975. His expertise in geology led him to found West Africa Consultants in 1975, where he served as President until 1978.
His dedication to the development of Liberia’s natural resources was further exemplified through his tenure as Minister of Lands & Mines in the Government of Liberia from 1978 to 1980. During this period, Wotorson also served as Chairman of the Liberian Petroleum Refinery Company from 1978 to 1983, a role in which he played a pivotal part in the country’s energy sector.
He also served as the President of the Nimba Mining Company from 1988 to 1990.
In 2009, the former Senator reached the pinnacle of his political career when he was elected President Pro Tempore of the Senate of Liberia, defeating fellow Senator Gbehzohngar Milton Findley. He served in this capacity until 2012.
Wotorson also sought higher political office, serving as the Standard Bearer of the Alliance of Political Parties in the 1997 presidential election. He placed fourth out of thirteen candidates, garnering 2.57% of the vote in that election.
Wotorson’s death marks the end of a storied career that spanned academia, geology, and politics. His contributions to Liberia will be remembered as those of a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly for the betterment of his country.
