MONROVIA, Liberia — Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah has resigned as president of the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA), saying his appointment by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to head the Law Reform Commission now demands his full and undivided attention.
Varmah, who has been serving simultaneously as LNBA president and Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of the Law Reform Commission of Liberia, announced his resignation Tuesday with immediate effect, describing the transition as a matter of national duty.
“The growing demands of leading the country’s law reform agenda require my undivided attention, strategic focus, and sustained institutional leadership,” Varmah said in his resignation statement.
From Bar Leadership to National Reform Mandate
President Boakai appointed Varmah to lead the Law Reform Commission while he was serving as the 18th president of the LNBA — a dual role that placed him at the center of both professional legal advocacy and national legislative modernization.
The Law Reform Commission is tasked with reviewing, modernizing and harmonizing Liberia’s laws, a responsibility Varmah described as critical to strengthening governance and institutional development.
“This national responsibility places upon me a solemn duty that requires my full concentration and impartial stewardship,” he declared.
Varmah noted that his resignation fulfills a commitment he made during the Bar’s December 2025 convention in Ganta, where he informed members that his expanding national responsibilities could necessitate stepping aside.
A Transition, Not a Departure
Despite relinquishing the presidency, Varmah emphasized that his decision does not signal a break from the legal community.
“This decision is not a separation from the Bar in spirit, but a reaffirmation of my enduring commitment to the rule of law and the advancement of our justice system,” he stated.
He pledged continued collaboration with the Association, particularly in advancing legal reform, strengthening professional standards and expanding access to justice across Liberia.
Gratitude and Institutional Legacy
In his farewell message, Varmah thanked the Bar’s national leadership, county associations and members for their trust during his tenure.
“The collective strides we have made together will remain a source of pride,” he said.
He urged the Association to remain steadfast as a guardian of professional integrity and a champion of justice, even as he transitions fully into his national reform role under the Boakai administration.
