CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia — In a powerful display of unity and renewed purpose, the University of Liberia Student Interim Leadership (ULSIL) raised the student union’s flag on the Capitol Hill campus Friday, symbolizing a collective pledge to advance student welfare and strengthen institutional bonds.
Themed “This Pledge is Our Allegiance,” the historic flag-raising ceremony drew students, faculty, and dignitaries, including House Speaker Richard Koon, a University of Liberia alumnus who pledged to champion campus development.
“This is my university. I studied here, I teach here, and I’m committed to giving back,” said Speaker Koon, promising government collaboration on student welfare and infrastructure upgrades. “We’ve already begun. I’ve spoken to the President about building new bathrooms and improving facilities. I’ll lead that effort — and I urge fellow alumni to join me.”
Koon stressed peaceful engagement over confrontation, assuring students of his open-door policy.
“Whatever the issue, reach out. There should be no riots. Let’s resolve issues constructively,” he said.
ULSIL President J. Blio B. Tingban described the moment as a turning point, calling the flag more than a symbol — a declaration of student solidarity and forward vision.
“The flag we raise today stands for our unity, our determination, and the future we envision for this university,” Tingban said, thanking Speaker Koon for his presence and pledging continued student leadership engagement.
She also appealed to alumni to reconnect and invest in the university’s progress.
“The challenges are many, but with collective effort, they are surmountable. The students need you now more than ever,” she said.
The event concluded with a heightened sense of unity and purpose among attendees. ULSIL officials say the flag-raising will become an annual tradition to reinforce partnerships between students, alumni, administrators, and government stakeholders.
