MONROVIA – Samuel D. Tweah said President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s appointment of Abrah Kromah, former Deputy Police Director for Operations to lead the “Protect Our Resources Taskforce” was hastened by the unity of the opposition bloc as demonstrated in Grand Gedeh County during the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) 22nd founding anniversary celebrations.
It can be recalled that President Boakai recently set up the Protect Our Resources Taskforce (PORT), a strike team under the Executive Order No. 167 to combat illegal mining. According to the former Finance Minister Tweah, the appointment of the former Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) Director Kromah has been made to ease tension from the Mandigo tribal group, who he said are not happy with the Liberian leader for removing their kinsmen from his government.
“The regime is quivering under the fear of the political unity of the opposition. You saw they appointed Abe Kromah immediately. They said if you don’t appoint Abe, he will go to the opposition; appoint him, Mr. President. They said Kabineh J’aneh is coming and you lose him and Abe. Therefore, just appoint him. Whether it makes sense or not, appoint Abe,” Tweah said as his audience cheered him up with laughter.
The Protect Our Resources Taskforce, according to its terms of reference is charged with the responsibilities to seize heavy equipment, arrest offenders, and dismantle illicit operations across all of Liberia’s mining zones.
Kromah, known for his brutal operations tactics, is expected to deliver on the calling as mandated by the office of the President. While he was not reconsidered for continued service as head of LDEA following his altercation with Hassan Fadiga, his former deputy director for operations at LDEA, President Boakai.
The taskforce is an inter-agency platform including representatives from the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), and the Liberia National Police (LNP).
For Tweah, who was recently acquitted by a jury in a corruption case involving millions of United States Dollars but has been brought back for reexamination on account of jury tampering, the Boakai-led administration has failed in delivering its campaign messages, thereby targeting the opposition, particularly the immediate predecessors, with a political witch hunt.
Kabineh J’aneh, a former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court traveled to Grand Gedeh County as done by several others, including top opposition leaders, namely, Simeon Freeman of the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), Alexander Benedict Cummings of Alternative National Congress (ANC) and Musa Hassan Bility of Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) to grace the CDC anniversary not as a mere spectator but a keynot speaker. A shocking experience to many as those who invited him to grace their occasion were the same people who championed his impeachment from the Bench of the Supreme Court as as an Associate Justice-an action many thought he would have never forgiven former President George Weah and his political institution.
J’aneh, a seasoned lawyer, sought remedy at the ECOWAS Court in Nigeria and won against the Weah led government-according him the right to either reinstatement or a payoff of his entire salary and benefits for the remaining years of his service as well as an extra amount for the injury caused him by the action of the Weah-led government. He campaign against Weah, supporting Boakai to become President but has yet to receive an appointment by Boakai for any role.
This, and the removal of his kinsmen, including Mike Jabateh, Abraham Kromah and Sheik Kouyateh from the government may have prompted J’aneh now considering Weah as the lesser evil with whom to work, although he has not come out to state publicly.
