HARPER, Maryland County — Tubman University (TU) has taken a major step toward strengthening its academic capacity and global visibility through the signing of a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), one of Africa’s leading higher education institutions. The MoU seeks to strengthen academic exchanges and foster Pan Africanism.
The agreement—sealed during TU’s 12th Commencement Convocation—establishes a framework for joint research, faculty and student exchanges, collaborative academic programs, and cross-border innovation initiatives designed to elevate the university’s educational impact.
A Landmark Deal Rooted in Pan-African Cooperation
The signing was witnessed by UJ’s Vice Chancellor and Principal, Dr. Letlhokwa George Mpedi, who led a high-level South African delegation to Liberia. Dr. Mpedi described the partnership as more than an academic arrangement, calling it a continuation of a historic bond between Liberia and South Africa. He recalled Liberia’s early support for South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle—led in part by former Liberian President William V. S. Tubman, after whom TU is named. “Our liberation as Africans has always been interconnected,” Dr. Mpedi said. “This partnership is a modern extension of that shared history—one that advances knowledge, innovation, and opportunity across our borders.”
Education as a Bridge to a Stronger Africa
Dr. Mpedi stressed that Africa’s future hinges on collaboration between its educational institutions. With the continent facing rapid population growth, climate vulnerabilities, and economic pressures, he said universities must lead with research, creativity, and shared expertise. “African universities must stand at the center of knowledge production—not at the margins,” he emphasized, adding, “Through partnerships like this, we can build research ecosystems, strengthen capacity, and empower the next generation of African scholars.” He praised Liberia’s Ministry of Education for its commitment to values such as accountability, excellence, and diligence—principles that align with UJ’s mission of societal impact.
Dr. Menjay Welcomes the Partnership as a Turning Point for Tubman University
Tubman University (TU) President, Rev. Dr. Prof. Olu Q. Menjay, expressed gratitude to the University of Johannesburg for embracing the collaboration, calling it a “strategic milestone” for TU’s institutional advancement. “This partnership places Tubman University on a broader global platform,” Dr. Menjay said. “We are committed to enriching our academic offerings, supporting diversity, and expanding opportunities for students—especially through merit-based scholarships.”
He reaffirmed TU’s dedication to building a university community grounded in academic rigor, cultural appreciation, and innovation. A Graduation Marked by Promise and Progress The ceremony also celebrated two hundred and sixty five graduates from six colleges, representing a wide range of disciplines. The new partnership, signed on their commencement day, symbolizes a growing web of opportunities awaiting current and future students.
As the Class of 2025 steps forward, Tubman University moves into a new phase—one defined by cross-border and international collaboration, strengthened academic networks, and renewed commitment to contributing to Africa’s development.
