MONROVIA – Vision Basketball has officially launched the maiden edition of the Monrovia Madness All-Star Basketball Festival.
The launching ceremony was held recently at Cape Hotel in Mamba Point, with ten communities set to participate in what is expected to become an annual tournament.
The participating communities include Logan Town, Duport Road, New Kru Town, Sinkor, Barnersville, Brewerville, ELWA, Gardnersville, Central Monrovia, and Old Road.
The off-season basketball tournament is scheduled to run from April 2-6, 2025, at the Samuel Kayon Doe Gymnasium in Paynesville.
Speaking at the launching event, the Chairman of Vision Basketball, Jacob Kabakollie, announced that the champion community will receive a mini basketball court to be built by Vision Basketball, the organizers of the tournament.
“This year’s tournament champions will earn the prestigious honor of having a newly built community basketball court named after a legendary figure who has significantly impacted basketball development,” he stated.
Kabakollie, who narrowly lost the Liberia Basketball Association presidency in 2023 by just one vote, reaffirmed Vision Basketball’s commitment to transforming the sport and discovering emerging talents as part of its growth strategy.
“Our goal is to revitalize the essence of competitive basketball—showcasing emerging talents and promoting unity among both active and inactive young players,” he added.
The tournament will climax with a special Award Ceremony and Dinner Night.
Additionally, four old-timer basketball teams and two female basketball teams have been invited for exhibition matches. As part of the tournament’s rules and regulations, each participating community is required to feature one foreign player, provided the player is a resident of the community.
In 2023, Liberia was represented at the Africa Basketball Festival in Accra, Ghana, through the sponsorship of Mr. Kabakollie.
