MONROVIA — A non-political movement called “Team Byron,” led by popular social media influencer and youth advocate Byron Brown, has launched an initiative to distribute school supplies to over 300 children in Montserrado County’s Electoral District #8.
Mr. Brown, widely known for his advocacy for social justice, good governance, and human rights across Liberia, is taking a new approach by reaching out to those in need, particularly in the face of the economic challenges affecting many citizens.
Accompanied by members of Team Byron, Brown distributed packages containing notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers, and other essential school items to children at two schools in the district on Monday, September 9, 2024.
Speaking to journalists after the event, Mr. Brown shared his personal experience of struggling with limited opportunities during his primary and secondary school years. “I know what it means when your parents are eager to send you to school, but sadly, they don’t have the financial means to do so,” he said.
He emphasized that the gesture was aimed at bringing joy to underprivileged students in the district and supporting parents as schools reopen across the country.
“We will always be here because you are our friends, and your happiness is our happiness. We are here to help ‘mama’ and ‘papa’ by giving you these school materials,” Mr. Brown stated.
He also encouraged the children to remain focused on their education, reminding them that they represent the future of Liberia. “Some of you want to be president, senator, representative, minister, and so forth, but you can’t achieve that great dream if you’re not educated.”
Chairman Byron, as he is also known, revealed plans for the upcoming distribution of over 300 bags of 25kg rice to struggling parents across the country. Additionally, he announced plans to donate medical supplies to Liberia’s largest medical facility, John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia.
Mr. Brown called on other humanitarian organizations and patriotic citizens, both in Liberia and abroad, to join his movement in supporting the Liberian people and their children.
In response, the school administrators expressed their gratitude for Byron Brown’s initiative, describing it as timely and greatly appreciated.
“We are grateful on behalf of these kids. The fact that you can use your resources to support these children shows your love and passion for giving them a brighter future,” they remarked.
