The Sports Writers Association of Liberia has appointed an eight-member committee, chaired by veteran sports journalist and former SWAL Treasurer Momoh B. Siryon.
Siryon, who now works in government communication, will coordinate preparations for SWAL’s Extraordinary Congress in November and the 26th Elective Congress in December 2026.
Samuel David of the Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission will serve as co-chair, while Varflay Kamara, communications director of the National Civil Service Agency, has been named secretary-general of the committee.
Other members are Joy FM reporter Shirley Banks, journalist Leila Gbati, and veteran sports journalists Jarbah Washington, Sametta Williams and Frank Payne of Grand Bassa County.
SWAL President Varmah Kamara said the appointments aim to ensure both congresses are properly organized and conducted in accordance with the association’s constitution.
He said the Extraordinary Congress will allow members to review the constitution, consider proposed amendments and address key policy and operational issues affecting the association.
The Elective Congress will focus on the leadership’s financial and narrative reports covering the past three years and facilitate the transition to a new leadership.
Kamara said the process is guided by Article 6, Section 1, of the SWAL Constitution, which identifies Congress as the association’s highest decision-making body and a forum for discussing policies, operational procedures and constitutional amendments.
He also cited Article 6, Section 2, which provides for an elective congress every three years during the second week of December.
The committee is expected to coordinate agendas and documents, encourage member participation, oversee logistics and publicity, mobilize resources, engage stakeholders and prepare reports following the congresses.
The SWAL leadership expressed confidence in the committee and urged its members to work together to ensure that both congresses are conducted successfully and transparently, in the best interests of the association and its members.
