SUAKOKO, Bong County — Four people were killed and six critically injured Saturday afternoon when a speeding taxi trying to overtake on the Suakoko Highway swerved into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into another taxi, witnesses said.
The crash happened about 4 p.m. as a yellow commercial pickup taxi headed toward Monrovia collided with a taxi bound for Gbarnga, leaving both vehicles wrecked and several passengers trapped inside.
Rescue workers and bystanders tore apart sections of the mangled vehicles to free those pinned in the wreckage.
The Bong County Health Team rushed the injured to Phebe Hospital, where they are receiving emergency care. Officers of the Liberia National Police Bong County Detachment directed traffic along the busy highway and secured passengers’ belongings.
Traffic investigators confirmed that four people, three men and one woman, died in the crash. Six others remain in critical condition. Authorities have not released the identities of the dead or injured, saying families are still being notified.
Police have opened an investigation to determine the exact cause. Preliminary accounts suggest excessive speed and a reckless overtaking may have contributed, though investigators have not issued a formal finding.
The crash adds to mounting concern over road safety on Liberia’s highways, where speeding, reckless overtaking and weak enforcement of traffic rules continue to drive fatal wrecks.
Police said more information would be released as the investigation continues.
