Monrovia – Solidarity & Trust for a New Day (STAND), one of Liberia’s leading civil society organizations, has issued a stern call for President Joseph Boakai to urgently reshuffle his cabinet and prosecute officials implicated in corruption. The organization warns that the government’s failure to act decisively could lead to a collapse in governance and worsen the already dire economic situation in the country, affecting millions of citizens who rely on essential social services.
STAND argues that the administration is grappling with widespread corruption, which has severely eroded public trust in the government. The organization emphasized that this problem has reached a critical stage that demands immediate intervention to prevent further deterioration of the country’s governance and economic stability.
In its statement, STAND expressed deep disappointment with Liberia’s political leadership, accusing them of lacking a historical awareness of the devastating consequences of corruption, human rights violations, and economic inequality. The civil society group invoked the memory of Liberia’s 14-year civil war, which claimed the lives of 250,000 people and resulted in an estimated $100 billion to $150 billion in property damage. STAND reminded the country’s leaders that corruption and mismanagement were among the driving forces behind the war, and these issues must be addressed to avoid repeating such a tragic history.
“We are at a critical crossroads,” STAND declared, urging the Boakai administration to take bold and decisive action to restore integrity in governance. The organization insists that swift, impartial investigations into corruption allegations are essential to ensuring accountability, regardless of the political, ethnic, or religious affiliations of those involved.
STAND further warned that Liberia’s current economic mismanagement, coupled with internal divisions and underperformance, is undermining the administration’s capacity to deliver essential services. The group believes these challenges are pushing millions of Liberians into deeper poverty and despair. Without immediate efforts to remove compromised officials and reinstate trust in the government, STAND argues, the country risks further alienation from its citizens.
The civil society group also decried the impact of cronyism and unchecked impunity within the government, stating that these issues are major barriers to national progress. STAND insists that President Boakai must surround himself with competent technocrats who are dedicated to the country’s welfare and not merely political interests.
“President Boakai must rise to the occasion and prioritize integrity, accountability, and transparency to ensure that the mistakes of past administrations are not repeated,” the statement read.
STAND’s call comes amid growing concerns over the government’s handling of the economic crisis and increasing frustration among Liberians struggling to make ends meet. The organization specifically pointed out that Liberia’s economy appears to favor foreign interests, while ordinary citizens, including shopkeepers, teachers, police officers, farm workers, and civil servants, face economic hardship.
STAND reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for policies and services that prioritize the needs of the Liberian people. The organization emphasized that this moment calls for courageous leadership, urging President Boakai to reassess his administration’s approach and champion policies that will uplift the nation.
