MONROVIA – Montserrado County District #7 Representative Solomon George expressed doubts about former President George M. Weah’s potential return to Liberia’s presidency in 2029. Speaking on the “Okay Morning Rush” show on Okay FM 99.5 on Tuesday, October 9, 2024, George reflected on the leadership of the former ruling establishment, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).
George mentioned that despite his past advice to Weah, the former president did not heed his suggestions. “The Liberian people loved former President Weah, but he did not govern well, and I doubt he will return to the presidency soon,” said George.
He alleged that Weah’s inability to dismiss or take action against non-performing officials during his tenure was a significant factor in his loss in the 2023 election. “I personally told former President Weah to bundle those non-performing ministers and directors into one ‘Ghana Must Go Bag,’ but he allegedly refused, and now he is realizing the consequences,” George added.
Furthermore, George clarified that he does not see himself campaigning for the CDC in 2029 if Weah is on the ballot. He also commented on former House Speaker Alex Tyler, recognizing him as a capable leader, despite being sanctioned by the American government for alleged corruption. In contrast, George believes the current House Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, Cllr. Fornati Koffa, is commendable but faces challenges in managing lawmaker respect due to his conciliatory approach.
Reflecting on his tenure from 2011 to 2023, George criticized the National Legislature for prioritizing personal interests over those of the Liberian people. He expressed support for President Joseph Boakai, urging him to learn from the CDC’s missteps and protect his legacy against those who might seek to undermine it.
George says remains open to serving the Liberian people again if called upon by President Boakai and encouraged all Liberians to pray for the nation and its leaders rather than wishing for governmental failure due to political disagreements.
