MONROVIA— Lofa County Senator Momo T. Cyrus has secured a seat on the Executive Committee of the Liberia Football Association, pledging to use his dual role as a lawmaker and football administrator to advocate for increased national budgetary support for sports development across Liberia.
Cyrus, who also chairs the Senate National Defense, Security, Intelligence & Veteran Affairs Committee was elected alongside 10 others to the LFA Executive Committee during a closely contested election held May 15 at the association’s headquarters. Meanwhile, Mustapha I. Raji was re-elected unopposed for a third and final term as LFA president.
Push for Greater Government Support
During the campaign debate ahead of the election, Cyrus highlighted what he described as the major challenges confronting sports development in Liberia, particularly the lack of funding.
Serving as co-chair of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports, the Momo Cyrus said Liberia possesses enormous sporting potential but stressed that progress will depend on commitment, passion, and sustained investment from stakeholders, including government, club owners, administrators, and fans.
“This is not where we want Liberian football to be,” Cyrus said. “Many of our sister countries are moving ahead while we lag behind due to funding.”
He argued that his new position on the LFA Executive Committee would provide him with firsthand insight into the challenges affecting football administration, enabling him to advocate more effectively within the Legislature for increased support to the sports sector.
“Considering my role as a senator and co-chair of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports, this is a perfect opportunity to understand the problems and elevate them to the national government through the Legislature,” he said.
Funding Remains Major Challenge
The senator, who also serves as chief executive officer of Wologizi FC, described inadequate funding as the biggest obstacle hindering the growth of sports in Liberia, including football, kickball, basketball, and other disciplines.
Cyrus said he intends to lobby for an increase in the LFA’s national budget allocation during future legislative appropriations discussions, while working alongside Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence and other members of the Senate Youth and Sports Committee.
“Sitting on the Youth and Sports Committee puts me at the table where budget decisions are made. That will allow me to make a strong case for sports at the Legislature,” he said.
“I’m vying for this position to help the leadership of the Liberia Football Association,” Cyrus added.
Corporate Partnerships and Women’s Football
The newly elected executive committee member also pledged to pursue innovative approaches to sports financing by engaging concession companies operating in Liberia — including Bea Mountain Mining Corporation, China Union, and ArcelorMittal — to contribute to sports development through their corporate social responsibility programs.
Cyrus further promised to dedicate his entire LFA stipend over the next four years to sports development initiatives, with particular emphasis on women’s football and support for Liberia’s national teams.
“Under our leadership, the Lone Star will shine through our advocacy for funding,” he said.
He noted that many club owners continue to invest personal resources to sustain sports activities in Liberia and therefore deserve representation and a stronger voice in national sports decision-making.
Record in Sports Administration
Before his election to the LFA Executive Committee, Momo Cyrus served as chairman of the Lofa County Sports Steering Committee, where he helped guide the county to six championships across football, kickball, and basketball during the National County Sports Meet.
During his tenure, he also played a major role in supplying boots, jerseys, and footballs for Lofa County teams participating in the annual competition.
In club football, Cyrus oversees Wologizi FC, which won the 2024/2025 Liberian Second Division League title and earned promotion to the country’s First Division League.
