MONROVIA — Liberia’s senior women’s national team head coach, Selam Z. Kebede, has called for patience as the Lone Star arrived in Nouakchott, Mauritania, ahead of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Nations Cup.
Speaking to the press before the team’s departure, Kebede acknowledged the high expectations of Liberians but urged fans to temper those expectations, noting the youthfulness of her squad.
“We just need a little patience from Liberians. I understand everyone wants results,” the Ethiopian coach said.
Kebede said the squad is composed primarily of young players who are eager to compete at a high level, but warned that supporters should manage their expectations accordingly.
An elite CAF coaching instructor, Kebede was appointed as head coach of the women’s national team in July 2023 by the Liberia Football Association (LFA). Since her appointment, she has focused heavily on rebuilding the team with young talent.
She lost her first two matches in charge — World Cup qualifying fixtures against Cape Verde — shortly after her appointment. In the following year, Liberia did not register for any major tournament.
Liberia is placed in Group A alongside host Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, and Mali. This marks the Lone Star’s second appearance in the regional tournament. They finished third in the inaugural edition held in Sierra Leone.
Liberia will open their campaign on Monday, May 19, against Guinea-Bissau at the Cheikha Ould Boidiya Stadium. The team will then face Mauritania on May 21 and group favorites Mali on May 24.
Coach Kebede named a strong 21-player squad, including Iceland-based forward Mimi Janice Eiden, rising star Jessica Quachie, and Monrovia Football Academy midfielder Coslyn Bardy, who became the first player from the lower league to be selected for the national team.
The team has been training intensively since April 1, 2025.
