KOLAHUN, Lofa County – Lofa County District 3 Representative Momo Siafa Kpoto has officially broken ground for the long-overdue rehabilitation of the Ngokorhun-Savahun-Foya Road, a critical route that has suffered years of neglect. The initiative, expected to enhance transportation and economic activity in the region, is moving forward despite severe financial constraints.
The road, which connects multiple farming communities to key trade hubs, has long been in deplorable condition, hindering farmers and business owners from accessing markets and essential services. High transportation costs and logistical delays have stifled economic growth, leaving residents frustrated over successive governments’ failure to address the issue.
Budget Cuts and Personal Sacrifice
Originally, the project was earmarked to receive $100,000 under the Legislative Engagement Fund, but drastic budget cuts slashed the allocation to just $37,000, casting doubt on its feasibility. In response, Rep. Kpoto, along with Lofa County District 4 Representative Gizzie Kollence, stepped in with an additional $63,000 from personal resources to ensure the project commenced.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Kolahun Koba City, Rep. Kpoto revealed that he secured a loan to bridge the funding gap, pledging to repay it from his monthly salary of $5,234 USD and L$250,000.
“I could not sit back and allow bureaucratic delays to stall this critical project,” he declared. “Our people deserve better, and I am willing to make sacrifices to ensure development reaches them.”
While his intervention has been widely applauded by residents, concerns persist over the sustainability of financing infrastructure projects through personal loans rather than structured government allocations. Critics argue that such ad hoc measures, while commendable, expose deeper flaws in national governance and budgetary planning.
Project Timeline and Future Plans
Rep. Kpoto assured the public that roadwork would be completed within 30 days, with heavy-duty machinery already deployed to the site. He also hinted at future initiatives, including plans to elevate key communities to township status to improve local governance.
Beyond infrastructure, Kpoto reaffirmed his support for social and traditional policies, including his controversial push to criminalize same-sex relationships—a stance that has sparked heated debates within and beyond the district.
While his development efforts earn praise, his political and legislative agenda continues to divide opinions, positioning him as a key figure in Lofa County’s evolving political landscape.
