PSA prepares Liberian kids for youth handball Olympics, players praise Amb. Kebe

MONROVIA — The Professional Sports Academy (PSA) is breaking new ground in Liberia by training young athletes in handball, a sport long overshadowed by football, with the goal of competing at the 2026 Youth Handball Olympics in Senegal.

The Handball Academy, launched less than a year ago, is the first of its kind in Liberia and currently trains 78 children. Despite limited facilities and programs, founder Alioune Kebe, Liberia’s Ambassador for Youth and Sports Development, says the initiative is already showing results.

Building a Future in Handball

“The children want to play, but there is no facility or programs for them. We are determined to help the process,” Kebe said.

Coaches point to the players’ growing skills, passion, and discipline as proof of steady progress. The academy’s focus is not only on technical training but also on building commitment and confidence among its young athletes.

Kebe’s Commitment Amid Challenges

Kebe, who has largely funded the project from his own pocket, said he remains unfazed by what he called “cheap propaganda” aimed at undermining his credibility.

“Imagine me leaving and dashing the hopes of 300 talented kids at the academy just because of propaganda,” he said. “Because of the kids and my passion to help transform their lives, I reaffirm my commitment to youth and sports development in Liberia.”

Players and Coaches Respond

Both coaches and players praised the opportunity the academy provides. Two young players said the program has given them a sense of direction.

“We have passion for handball and are learning well,” they said. “Not all of us will play football or kickball. This sport is ours, and we remain committed.”

Kebe said PSA plans to build a modern sports complex that would include handball and other disciplines. The academy also intends to expand into communities, with current players serving as ambassadors to promote participation.

Supporters say such investments are critical to ensuring sports development in Liberia remains above politics and focused on nurturing talent.
