GBARNGA, Bong County – Police in Bong County say they have recovered several parcels of suspected gold from the belongings of a businessman killed in a highway crash near the Salala checkpoint on Tuesday, a find authorities have yet to value or fully account for.
Bong County Police Commander ACP William Johnson said officers found the suspected minerals, along with mobile phones and other personal items, in the bag of Josiah S. Doenunneh, one of two men who died when a Land Cruiser ran off the Monrovia to Gbarnga Highway. The value of the minerals has not been established, he said. “The suspected minerals, believed to be gold, along with several mobile phones and other personal belongings, were recovered from the deceased’s bag. The value of the minerals has not yet been established,” Johnson said.
Johnson appealed to the public to help locate Doenunneh’s family so the recovered items could be identified and handed over through the proper legal process. By Tuesday evening, relatives of Doenunneh and of the second victim, Honest Ojuku, had begun arriving at the Gbarnga Police Station, where grief-stricken family members wept as they mourned the deaths.
Gabriel Yarkpawolor, a commercial driver from Ganta, identified Doenunneh as a businessman from southeastern Liberia whose goods he had regularly transported.
The crash that killed the two men involved a white Toyota Land Cruiser, registration A6A0756, owned by the Catholic Diocese of Cape Palmas. According to police and eyewitness accounts, the vehicle was traveling toward Monrovia when the driver lost control, ran off the highway and plunged into bushes shortly after the Salala checkpoint. Eyewitnesses said six occupants were injured and taken to a nearby medical facility, while the two men died at the scene. Police say the investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
