BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa County — The National High School Sports Tournament in Grand Bassa County concluded a thrilling week of football and kickball action, with Open Bible High School claiming the football championship and SDA High School winning the kickball title.
The highly anticipated football grand final featured Open Bible High School against Gorblee High School at the refurbished Doris Williams Sports Stadium in Buchanan.
In a match that showcased the talents of both schools, Open Bible emerged dominant, securing a decisive 3-0 victory.
Key to Open Bible’s triumph was Forgive Brown, who netted two crucial goals—opening the scoring with a clinical finish in the first half and adding a second midway through the second half to solidify his team’s lead.
The prolific Richmond Bleh, a standout teenager throughout the tournament, sealed the championship with a late goal, etching Open Bible’s name into the annals of the competition.
Open Bible’s consistent performance throughout the tournament underscored its commitment to athletic excellence alongside academic achievement.
Gorblee High School’s journey to the final was equally notable. After initially losing to Open Bible in the quarterfinals, they were reintroduced into the tournament as the highest-ranking eliminated team. Despite this second opportunity, they could not overcome Open Bible’s superior form in the final showdown.
As champions, Open Bible High School received a cash prize of 20,000 Liberian dollars and will represent Grand Bassa County in the upcoming Regional County Playoffs, aiming to bring further glory to their school and community.
Gorblee High School, as runners-up, were awarded 15,000 Liberian dollars. Beyond the monetary prizes, the tournament served as a significant source of inspiration for students and communities, highlighting the transformative power of sports.
Organized by National High School Sports, the tournament brought together 12 accredited high schools from across Grand Bassa County for an exciting week of competition. More than just a sporting event, it was a vibrant celebration of youth, sportsmanship, and community spirit, reinforcing the organization’s broader mission.
Since 2017, National High School Sports has used its platform to promote school enrollment, exemplified by its first-ever nationwide high school football and kickball championship, which involved over 150 schools sanctioned by the Ministry of Education.
The tournament not only showcased the athletic talents of Liberia’s youth but also underscored the role of sports in fostering education, teamwork, and national development.
In the kickball division, SDA High School delivered an outstanding performance in their grand finale, securing a hard-fought 1-0 home run victory over Bassa High School and etching their name into the tournament’s history alongside the football champions.
