GBARNGA — A man has died following a single-vehicle crash early Tuesday along the Meleke Highway in Gbarnga, Bong County, authorities with the Liberia National Police confirmed.
The accident occurred around 2 a.m. when a truck carrying three occupants veered off the road and plunged into nearby bushes, police said.
Bong County Police Commander Fasu Sheriff, who lives near the crash site, said officers responded immediately to rescue the victims and assess the cause of the crash.
“Two of the occupants were rescued after we used another truck to forcibly open one side of the vehicle,” Sheriff told reporters. “Unfortunately, one person remained trapped until later in the day. He was removed and taken to Phebe Hospital, but medical staff confirmed he had already passed.”
The deceased, identified only as Abdulai, has been released to his family for burial, according to Sheriff.
Bong County Traffic Commander Inspector Mamadi M. Kenneh said preliminary findings suggest the crash was a “self-accident,” likely caused by the driver falling asleep or losing control.
“All the tires were intact, meaning there was no burst,” Kenneh said. “It appears the driver was either sleepy or distracted. We urge motorists to rest before driving, especially at night.”
The two survivors remain under medical observation at Phebe Hospital, police said.
Authorities are warning motorists traveling between Gbarnga and Monrovia to avoid late-night driving when fatigued, noting that driver negligence and lack of rest are leading causes of accidents along that corridor.
The Gbarnga–Phebe stretch remains one of the most accident-prone routes in Bong County, with multiple fatal crashes reported over the years.
