NASSCORP donates relief supplies to Bong orphanages for 50th Anniversary

Gbarnga, Bong County— The National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP), Region 5, has donated relief items valued at US$5,000 to three orphanages in Bong County as part of activities marking its 50th anniversary.

The donation, described as the first of its kind by the agency in Bong, was presented by NASSCORP Regional Director Bill Bowulo, who said the gesture was part of the agency’s ongoing effort to give back to vulnerable communities.

“We decided to donate to orphanages in the county, and this is the first of its kind,” Bowulo said during the presentation ceremony.

The beneficiaries of the donation include Rainbow Orphanage, Balamue Orphanage, and Mont Zion Rescue Mission. Items donated included 25kg bags of rice, mattresses, lappers, flour, salt, and other essential supplies.

Founded on July 10, 1975, NASSCORP was established to provide retirement and survivor benefits, income replacement, and medical care for employees affected by work-related injuries or occupational illnesses. Bowulo said the agency currently operates two flagship programs—the Employment Injury Scheme (EIS) and the National Pension Scheme (NPS)—which have enhanced the welfare of Liberian workers and retirees.

“NASSCORP was founded by a group of Liberians to help provide financial relief for public servants who retire or suffer injury while on duty,” Bowulo noted.

He also announced the agency’s plan to launch a National Welfare Scheme aimed at providing food assistance to its beneficiaries and called on the national government to support the initiative for wider impact.

As part of its golden jubilee celebration, NASSCORP also provided cash gifts to selected beneficiaries. Each received US$50 or its equivalent in Liberian dollars—approximately L$8,500—depending on their account currency.

“Fifty years, fifty dollars,” Bowulo said. “We paid in USD for those contributing in dollars, and in Liberian dollars for those contributing in LD.”

Orphanage administrators and several beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation for the support, saying it would help ease their daily challenges and improve the living conditions of children under their care.
