MONROVIA — Liberia has a new 10-year plan to manage its fisheries and a roadmap to attract private investment in fishing and aquaculture, after the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority presented both to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on Monday.
Boakai received the National Fisheries Management Strategy 2026-2036 and the National Fisheries Investment Plan and Implementation Roadmap Strategy at his Rehab office in Paynesville and pledged his administration’s support for sustainable fisheries development and for the Liberians who depend on the sector for their livelihoods.
The investment plan names private sector participation as the main driver of growth, innovation and wealth creation in the industry. Its implementation roadmap sets out investment priorities and proposed interventions to improve infrastructure, expand aquaculture and increase the sector’s contribution to the national economy.
The management strategy provides a 10-year framework for managing the country’s fisheries resources while balancing economic development against protection of the marine environment. NaFAA said it developed the strategy over a year of analytical work, field consultations, and institutional collaboration.
Together, the documents are intended to strengthen the sector’s institutional framework, attract investment and create economic opportunities for fishing communities across the country.
NaFAA Director General Cyrus Saygbe Sr. led the delegation that briefed the president. Boakai commended the authority’s management and recognized the importance of fisheries to food security, economic development and the protection of Liberia’s marine resources.
The authority also presented its third-quarter performance report, covering its achievements, ongoing interventions, institutional developments and priorities for the coming months, and briefed the president on plans for World Fisheries Day, which Liberia will observe Nov. 21 in Harper, Maryland County.
The observance is expected to coincide with the opening of NaFAA’s first regional office, part of an effort to decentralize fisheries services and bring them closer to fishing and aquaculture communities outside Monrovia.
Saygbe was accompanied by Deputy Director General for Administration Madia H. Peters-Magbollah; Abraham Dioh, project coordinator of the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project; and Ezekiel Allen, chief of staff to the director general.
