MPC Calls for Fair Play Amid Violence at CDC Headquarters

MONROVIA — Liberian businessman Simeon Freeman, through his political party, the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), has condemned any form of violence in Liberia and urged for fairness in addressing potential future incidents.

In a statement, the MPC vowed not to engage in the blame game regarding the recent events at the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) headquarters but called on the Liberian government to reveal the full truth behind the outbreak of violence between the CDC and the police.

The MPC emphasized that the Liberian government must provide clarity to the public on what transpired at the CDC headquarters.

“Government needs to tell us the true story behind the violence that occurred between the police and members of the CDC and stop the blame game,” the statement read.

According to the MPC, Liberian citizens deserve transparency and accountability rather than experiencing disturbances caused by any form of violence.

“There must be consequences for such massive disruptions and the injuries inflicted on the people and the state,” the statement added.

The MPC called on the government to take proactive measures to prevent any future violence that could disrupt peace and economic activities in Liberia.

The party also demanded that the government clearly provide the truth surrounding the incident. For the second time in a month, the Liberia National Police (LNP) and supporters of the CDC have clashed violently, causing chaos around the party’s headquarters.

Thursday’s violence follows the August 5, 2024 incident, where the LNP deployed riot police near the CDC headquarters in anticipation of a series of planned protests across Monrovia.

For most of Thursday, August 22, 2024, the police fired tear gas at CDC supporters, while CDC supporters threw stones at the police. The chaos left many in panic as people fled in fear for their lives.
