MOVEE Pledges Nationwide Machinery for Weah’s 2029 Bid, Alleges Cocaine Trafficking by Boakai Government

MONROVIA – Former President George Weah’s declared bid to return to the presidency in 2029 has picked up the campaign machinery of a constituent party of the Coalition for Democratic Change, with the Movement for Economic Empowerment pledging a county-by-county and district-by-district mobilization and casting the election as a mission to remove an administration it accused of corruption, abuse of power and cocaine trafficking.

MOVEE said its political leader and standard-bearer, Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah Sr., has renewed a directive for nationwide mobilization to be run in coordination with the CDC and the coalition’s other constituent parties, covering all 15 counties down to the district and community level, for Weah and for the coalition’s senatorial and representative candidates. The commitment came in a statement issued Sunday from the party’s headquarters on Weaver Street in Paynesville, signed by National Secretary General Jeremiah Edison Paye and approved by National Chairman Prince G. Mehn.

The party said Liberia must be redeemed from economic hardship, corruption, political persecution, abuse of power, disregard for the rule of law and illegal drug trafficking, “including, but not limited to cocaine,” under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Koung. It offered no evidence for the trafficking allegation, named no official and cited no case.

The party described Weah’s decision as “not just for a political contest, but a national mission to redeem Liberia and the Liberian People,” and attributed to Kemayah, a former foreign minister in the Weah administration, the line that the 2029 comeback is irreversible and unstoppable.

Weah declared his candidacy on July 30 at the CDC USA chapter convention, according to reports of the event, ending speculation that had persisted since June, when Kemayah publicly rejected claims that the former president had ceded his ambitions to Alternative National Congress political leader Alexander Cummings.

MOVEE said it endorsed Weah in the 2017 presidential runoff under a collaboration with the CDC, later joined the coalition as a constituent party and backed him in the 2023 general and presidential elections. The party said it would stand “even stronger” with him and with the coalition’s legislative candidates in 2029.

The statement referred to Weah as the incoming 27th president of Liberia. Weah was the 25th president, serving from 2018 to 2024. Boakai, who defeated him in the 2023 runoff, is the 26th.

MOVEE also said it would continue what it called practical empowerment through the Ambassador Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah Sr. Women Empowerment and Vocational Skills Training Program, which it said remains free of charge for youth, girls and women.

Liberia’s next general and presidential elections are due in October 2029.
