KAKATA, Margibi County — Groups of commercial motorcyclists on Friday blocked the Redlight–Kakata highway at Morris Farm in Todee District, staging a protest over the gruesome killing of one of their colleagues.
The victim, identified as Eric Kollie, popularly known as “KK,” in his early 20s, was found dead near Amsay School on the outskirts of Kakata. Reports indicate that he was allegedly lured to the location by suspected attackers who later murdered him and made away with his motorbike.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the victim suffered severe injuries during a struggle, including a fatal wound to the neck.
The incident has sparked outrage among commercial motorcyclists, who accuse authorities of failing to adequately protect them against increasing attacks by criminals targeting riders for their bikes.
Protesters blocked the major highway for several hours, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded and causing a long line of vehicles in both directions.
In addition to demanding justice for the slain rider, the aggrieved motorcyclists are also calling for the unconditional release of several of their colleagues currently in detention for allegedly killing a suspected motorbike thief.
“When criminals kill us, the police do nothing, but when we take action against motorbike thieves, they arrest and jail us,” one protester said.
Authorities are yet to officially respond to the incident, as tension remains high in the area with commuters and residents calling for swift intervention to restore normal traffic and address the concerns of the protesting riders.
