MONROVIA — Minnesota United FC and MNUFC2 will host the Liberia national football team in an international friendly on July 26 at Allianz Field.
Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. CT.
The match will mark the first international friendly for MNUFC2 and the club’s 16th overall. It also coincides with Liberia’s Independence Day.
Single-game tickets went on sale Thursday, following presales earlier in the day for season ticket members, members of The Preserve, and MNUFC newsletter subscribers. Tickets became available to the general public at 2 p.m. CT. The match will not count as part of the 18-game package for season ticket members.
Minnesota forward Darius Randell, a homegrown player born in Monrovia, has family ties to Liberia. Minnesota is home to one of the largest Liberian populations in the United States, and the match is expected to serve as a cultural celebration in the Twin Cities.
Former Liberia international Johnny Menyongar also has ties to Minnesota, having played for the Minnesota Thunder from 2000 to 2005. He made 188 appearances and scored 56 goals, helping the club reach the semifinals of the 2005 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. He later played for the NSC Minnesota Stars in 2010 and captained Liberia from 2004 to 2006.
Liberia’s national team finished third in the 2011 West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup and has appeared twice in the Africa Cup of Nations, placing ninth in 2002 and 13th in 1996.
Former striker George Weah remains Liberia’s most notable player. He earned 75 caps and scored 18 goals for the national team from 1986 to 2003. Weah won the Ballon d’Or and was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 1995. He later served as Liberia’s president from 2018 to 2024.
The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has also confirmed that the men’s under-20 team will represent the country.
