Montserrado County – The Ministry of Public Works has commenced the demolition of structures built illegally on alleyways in Montserrado County and surrounding areas. The demolition, according to the ministry, is aimed at clearing obstructions and create easier access for vehicular movement and public passage.
The operation kicked off on Smythe Road in Montserrado County’s District #10, where bulldozers were seen breaking down structures that had been constructed on public alleyways.
The exercise was carried out under the supervision of officers from the Liberia National Police, ensuring order during the demolition process.
Speaking to reporters on-site, Minister of Public Works Roland Giddings emphasized the importance of the initiative.
He stated that the ministry’s efforts are designed to clear illegal structures and prevent future encroachments on public passageways. “This exercise is meant to ensure easy access and create avenues for vehicular movement, among other things,” Minister Giddings remarked.
He further stressed that the demolition process would proceed without interference to serve as a clear message to anyone considering building on public alleyways. “We want to make it clear that no one is above the law. This should serve as a deterrent for those who intentionally disregard regulations,” Giddings warned.
Minister Giddings also urged citizens to consult with the Ministry of Public Works before embarking on construction projects to avoid illegal encroachment on public land. “We encourage the public to always seek our advice before constructing any structure to avoid building in restricted areas,” he advised.
The minister promised that this initiative would be extended to other parts of the country in the near future, as part of a broader effort to address illegal construction and improve public infrastructure.
