MONROVIA — Former Representative of Lofa County District #4, Mariamu Fofana, has sharply criticized the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), calling it a “big mistake” to have supported the party during its years in power.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Voice of Wologizi, Fofana aligned herself with the sentiments of talk show host Henry Costa, asserting that the CDC failed the Liberian people and lacks the leadership capacity for a political comeback.
“I’m hearing CDC wants to turn a setback into a comeback, but they’re not coming back anywhere,” Fofana stated emphatically, adding that any future attempt at national leadership would require a complete overhaul of the party’s internal structure.
She attributed much of the CDC’s decline to what she described as the flawed leadership of former President George M. Weah.
“The former president is someone who doesn’t take advice,” Fofana said. “He was surrounded by people who deliberately blocked access to him, even from those who meant well.”
Fofana also pointed to the CDC’s failure to protect former House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa during the recent legislative dispute, arguing that the party’s inaction led to Koffa’s loss of the speakership to the Unity Party.
“CDC didn’t stand by the former speaker when it mattered most. Their silence and inaction played a major role in his defeat,” she said.
Despite her disillusionment with the CDC, the former lawmaker praised the Unity Party-led government under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for what she described as a “progressive path” toward national renewal.
“The Unity Party is serious about fighting corruption and laying the foundation for real development,” she said. “That’s commendable.”
Fofana’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment among some former CDC supporters who say they feel betrayed by the party’s performance while in office and are now shifting allegiance.
