MONROVIA – The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works (MPW) and the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), has embarked on a massive demolition exercise today, Monday, to clear alleyways and ensure the free flow of water during the rainy season.
LWSC Managing Director Mohammed Ali, in an interview with journalists over the weekend, disclosed that occupants who had illegally built structures in alleyways were given a five-month notice since last year, but they have now overstayed by approximately nine months. Despite repeated warnings, they have refused to vacate these areas.
“Beginning today, Monday, our teams from LWSC, MPW, and MCC are ready to enforce the demolition exercise in central Monrovia, including Gurley Street, Mecline Street, Carey Street, and Down Water, where women usually gather to plait hair,” Ali stated.
He explained that once the exercise is completed, it will allow teams from the LWSC, MPW, and MCC to work effectively in the city and surrounding areas. He further emphasized that individuals who built illegally in alleyways will not be compensated, as they constructed their structures on government property despite being given ample time to vacate.
Ali urged those still occupying alleyways to begin vacating immediately to avoid unnecessary embarrassment, as the joint task force is set to proceed with the demolition.
“This exercise will extend beyond Monrovia to Bushrod Island to ensure proper drainage and reduce the severe flooding that residents in these areas experience during the rainy season,” Ali added.
He noted that residents in affected areas, particularly on Gurley Street, should cooperate with the demolition teams to ensure a smooth operation. Additionally, he warned individuals who have rebuilt structures in previously demolished areas to vacate immediately, as the LWSC, MPW, and MCC will not tolerate further illegal encroachment.
