MONROVIA — Two Liberian internationals called up by interim coach Thomas Kojo were unable to travel with the national team Sunday because of passport complications.
Defender Jah Nyanforh of Blackman Warriors FC and midfielder Daniel Toee of LISCR FC were left behind as the Lone Star departed for Tunisia ahead of next month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Nyanforh, who earned a spot on the final roster after weeks of training, failed to disclose that his passport was under review for another travel program. The oversight led to the government purchasing a ticket for him, only to later discover he could not travel, causing a financial loss.
Toee remains in Monrovia, seeking assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to resolve his documentation issue. Team officials said he could join the squad in Tunisia if the matter is settled quickly.
The absences compound Liberia’s selection woes. Center back Sampson Dweh, 25, has also been ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained Aug. 12 while playing for Viktoria Plzeň in a UEFA Champions League qualifier against Rangers. Although Dweh has resumed light training, both his club and Liberian officials agreed he should miss international duty to focus on recovery.
Liberia sits third in Group H with 10 points from six matches. Tunisia leads the group with 16 points, followed by Malawi. Tunisia edged Liberia 1-0 in Monrovia in March, while Malawi claimed a 1-0 victory earlier this year.
The Lone Star face Tunisia in Tunis on Sept. 4 before traveling to Malawi on Sept. 8. Both matches are critical to Liberia’s hopes of advancing.
