Paynesville — The Ministry of Youth and Sports will host a series of activities this weekend to commission the newly restored floodlighting system at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
The upgrade replaced the stadium’s analogue lighting with digital HD LED fixtures, ending several years of limited night-time use at the Confederation of African Football-approved venue. The restoration was finished last month.
The new lighting system, installed by Greenfield Electrical Engineering Company, provides approximately 1,200 lux and is expected to last between 15 and 20 years with proper upkeep. The ministry said the project, estimated at $500,000, marks the comeback of night football at the facility.
According to the ministry, the system was fully installed and tested on October 26, allowing evening matches for the first time in over two years. The upgrades comply with international standards, opening the door for National County Sports Meet games, Liberia Football Association league fixtures, and potentially CAF and FIFA-sanctioned matches.
During the commissioning ceremony, Deputy Sports Minister G. Andy Quamie announced that exhibition matches will be held on Friday, Nov. 14. Grand Bassa County will play against Montserrado County in the first game, followed by Lofa County versus Nimba County.
Quamie said the event is being sponsored by Orange Liberia and Orange Money.
“All of our federations and associations are invited, including the media, to grace the event,” he said.
Quamie also expressed gratitude to Liberia’s sports organizations, especially the Liberia Football Association, for their support of the ministry during the time when the stadium lights were not working.
