Sports writers urged to join fight against substandard and falsified medicines

MONROVIA — At the annual awards ceremony honoring Liberian athletes and sports journalists, the Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) issued a strong call to action, urging members of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) to become allies in the fight against substandard and falsified medicines.

Speaking at the event, LMHRA Managing Director Dr. Luke L. Bawo emphasized the shared responsibility among athletes, supporting institutions, and the media to uphold integrity in sports.

“The pursuit of excellence has, in some cases, been overshadowed by challenges that must be addressed to ensure the integrity of our sports,” Bawo said, highlighting growing concerns about transparency and ethics, especially regarding performance-enhancing substances.

He reiterated LMHRA’s commitment to fostering an environment where health and integrity are prioritized over mere victories. The authority outlined several ways SWAL can meaningfully contribute to this national campaign — from publishing in-depth articles that educate the public and athletes about the dangers of falsified medicines, to sharing real-life stories of athletes affected by such drugs.

Dr. Bawo also encouraged sports journalists to investigate and expose cases of counterfeit medications in sports, hold perpetrators accountable, and collaborate with anti-doping agencies to promote clean competition.

“Use your social media platforms to raise awareness and educate followers about the risks associated with fake medications,” he urged.

Bawo praised sports writers as “not just chroniclers of events” but “watchdogs for ethical practice, advocates for fairness, and heralds of change.” He noted that by spotlighting the importance of clean sports, journalists play a critical role in ensuring victories are celebrated for their integrity as much as their results.

He added that through partnerships between regulatory authorities, sports organizations and the media, Liberia can move toward a future where athletes thrive without the shadow of unethical practices.

While celebrating the achievements of athletes and the dedication of sports journalists, Bawo said the occasion served as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to protect the health and integrity of Liberian sports.

The LMHRA extended heartfelt congratulations to all award recipients, recognizing their accomplishments as personal milestones and symbols of inspiration for future generations. The agency’s call for SWAL members to join the fight against illicit medicines, Bawo said, could define a new era of health, fairness and respect in Liberian athletics.
