MONROVIA, Liberia — The Liberty Party (LP) has commended the ruling Unity Party government’s diplomatic efforts with the United States, which resulted in the extension of visa validity for Liberian citizens from one year to three years.
The LP is an alliance party to the Unity Party as a fraction of it led by then embattled political leader Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence supported the presidential bid of former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai. LP was a divided party in 2023 when elections were held as Musa Hassan Bility, now Representative of Nimba District #7 led a faction of the party in supporting the Alternative National Congress (ANC) Alexander Benedict Cummings’s presidential bid. Bility was by then the chairman of the opposition party.
Today, the Liberty Party has become once again a united party as founded by the late erudite legal luminary, Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskin.
To the LP, the U.S. extension of visa validity for Liberians is seen as a significant achievement, demonstrating Liberia’s growing international credibility and effective inter-governmental collaboration. The Liberty Party praised President Joseph N. Boakai, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Senate and House Committees on Foreign Affairs for their roles in securing the extension. “This achievement reveals what is possible when national interest rises above personal interest,” the party stated. “Together, we can do better.”
The party’s Secretary General, Martin Saye Kollah, described the outcome as a “victory for ordinary Liberians” and a “momentous achievement.” The extension is expected to ease travel challenges for Liberians, reducing costs and improving access to global opportunities.
The Liberty Party urged the government to build on this success by strengthening consular services, improving passport processing systems, and pursuing additional visa facilitation agreements with strategic partners. Kollah reaffirmed the party’s commitment to supporting bipartisan cooperation in foreign policy and initiatives that enhance citizen welfare.
